It’s easier, cheaper, and more effective to prevent than to treat. Keep your risk of sinus infection and open airways at bay by staying well. Care for yourself on a daily basis.

Drink a lot of water
Stay adequately hydrated to thin mucus, so sinuses are able to drain it more easily. Mucus is wet and gooey and plugs and infects with dryness. Make 6–8 glasses of water a day.

Maintain Air Moisture
Dry air dehydrates your nose and sinuses. Placing a humidifier on your bedroom, particularly when it is about to get cold outside, humidifies the air and calms hot nasal passages. Just remember to clean the humidifier occasionally. So bacteria and mold will not infect the humidifier.

Wash Your Hands Frequently
Colds and viruses will be more likely to infect your sinuses. So washing your hands is the best way of keeping them out of your system. Soap and water or disinfectant if soap and water is not available is used.

Practice Good Nasal Hygiene
You can also use saline spray or neti pot to clean your nose and flush out dust, allergens, and germs. It also moisturizes the nasal tract and protects against infection. Clean your nose with fresh sterilized water at all times.

Treat Allergies
All of your sinuses are swollen and clogged up by allergies. So you have a better chance of getting infected. If you have allergies, talk to your doctor about taking antihistamines. Or take allergy shots, or diet changes. Vacuum your home, and wash your mattress. Try not to be around stuff like dust or pollen, and you’ll be okay too.

Avoid Cigarette Smoke and Pollution
Smoke irritates the nose. It causes tiny hairs (cilia) in sinuses to flap back and forth, disperse mucus. Stay away from smoke, fumes, and pungent chemical odors. It will help with good breathing.

Sleep Adequately
Your body’s infection-fighting machine works better if you sleep well. Adult sleep requirements are 7–9 hours of night-time to help keep their bodies in good working order and keep infection at bay.

Eat Correctly
Fruits, vegetables, grains, and lean meat are all eaten to supply your body with vitamins and minerals to fight disease. The top foods for your body are vitamin C foods like oranges and zinc foods like beans and nuts.

  • Steam inhalation: Breathing warm water vapor from a showerhead or basin thins nasal passages and mucus. 
  • Warm compress: A warm cloth across the face opens pressure sinuses and enlarges the drainage. 
  • Essential oils: Peppermint or eucalyptus oil in steam or humidifiers opens but use with utmost caution and not on children.

When to See a Doctor

Sinus infection can still occur despite prevention. You need to phone the doctor in case you have that:

  • Symptoms lasted longer than 10 days. 
  • Painful and inflamed face. 
  • Fever. 
  • You have a sinus infection every few months. 

Your doctors are treating you with antibiotics against bacterial infection, augmented nasal sprays, or radiologic tests if there were recurring infections.
